ARCO PROJECT BAR K DOG BAR RECEIVES CAPSTONE AWARD
_______________
Bar K Dog Bar and ARCO National Construction – KC, Inc. are thrilled to receive a 2019 Capstone Award from the Kansas City Business Journal. The Capstone Awards recognize real estate and development projects that are reshaping the KC area. Bar K was one of only three projects that received the distinction in the retail category and one of twenty-five projects awarded in total.
Community impact was a primary component of the award criteria. Bar K owners Leib Dodell and Dave Hensley recognized the potential of the previously unused space in the city, so they set out to create a facility that would draw people to the area. Dodell states, “Our building was made out of repurposed shipping containers. That was an intentional choice to create a modern, urban, cool aesthetic which is keeping with our location. We’re sitting on undeveloped property on the riverfront under the Heart of America bridge, so we wanted a design that fit within the industrial setting.”
ARCO was excited to take on the challenge of the design. “No shipping containers are the same, especially when they’re used,” remarked Sam Stahnke, Vice President at ARCO. The pieces fit together perfectly to create a building that looks like it truly belongs on the riverfront.
The idea for Bar K was born when Dodell and Hensley realized that most dog parks provided little entertainment for owners and most bars and restaurants did not allow pets at all. They envisioned a space that would combine the two and effectively brought it to life in 2018. Since opening in August, Bar K has become a beloved Kansas City destination. Because of its success, the opportunity to expand to other cities around the country is being explored.
Bar K and ARCO are proud to be involved in this unique addition to Kansas City and are grateful to have received this award.
