The Weeks Food Corporation expansion in Richmond, Michigan, has earned the 2026 CoStar Impact Award for Detroit Commercial Development of the Year. Delivered through ARCO’s design-build approach, the 21,515-square-foot temperature-controlled expansion enhances Weeks Food’s operational capacity and strengthens regional food distribution infrastructure.
Weeks Food Corporation, a fifth-generation, family-owned wholesale food distributor, partnered with ARCO to expand its existing facility with a purpose-built cold storage addition tailored to meet strict temperature and performance requirements.
The expansion includes a 10,231 SF cooler maintained at 34°F–36°F, a 6,232 SF 36°F cold dock, and a 4,795 SF -10°F freezer. The facility features fire-rated insulated metal panel (IMP) construction supported by a structural steel frame engineered to accommodate Michigan wind and snow loads. A 28-foot clear height, six dock positions, 1,200-amp electrical service, and a split-freon refrigeration system further support efficient, reliable operations.
To enhance performance and durability, the building incorporates reinforced perimeter columns, girts, and x-bracing to support rooftop and suspended refrigeration equipment. High-speed overhead doors minimize temperature fluctuation, while vertical dock levelers and interior protection elements strengthen the building envelope and maintain cleanliness standards critical to food distribution.
The project also included city utility connections, decommissioning and removal of an existing sanitary field system, and construction of a new road and access drive to improve site traffic flow. Construction was completed alongside ongoing facility operations, allowing Weeks Food to continue serving customers without interruption.
The expanded facility increases capacity for distributing frozen beef, pork, poultry, and seafood products throughout the region and increases the supply of fresh chicken to Kentucky Fried Chicken and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurants across Michigan and northern Ohio. The project reflects ARCO’s expertise in delivering complex, temperature-controlled facilities that support client growth and create lasting value.
