FOODSERVICE DISTRIBUTION & PROCESSING FACILITY EXPANSION IN ROCKY MOUNT, VA

Designed and Built for Empire Bakery Commissary, this project is a 30,100 total square foot foodservice distribution and processing facility expansion.

This 30,100 SF foodservice distribution and processing facility expansion significantly upgrades operational capabilities and overall efficiency. The project includes the construction of a new 13,740 SF -5°F freezer, designed to meet stringent cold storage requirements for food products. Alongside the freezer, the expansion adds an 8,740 SF conditioned warehouse, offering additional space for temperature-controlled storage and improving inventory management. The project also undertook a complete renovation of the existing 7,500 SF processing area, enhancing production workflows to support increased output while adhering to strict food safety standards.

A new 5,450 SF office was integrated into the facility to house administrative functions, while the retrofit of a 4,450 SF space transformed it into a 40°F cooler, increasing storage capacity for perishables. A 3,285 SF cold dock, maintained at 40°F, was added to streamline loading and unloading processes, ensuring temperature-sensitive goods are properly handled. The six dock positions allow for efficient truck access and distribution of products. The entire structure is built with a conventional steel frame and insulated metal panels, providing durability and thermal efficiency.

The facility utilizes a commercial Freon split refrigeration system to maintain optimal temperatures across the cold storage, freezer, and cooler spaces. A 45-mil mechanically fastened TPO roof system offers long-lasting protection against environmental elements, while the 35’ clear height allows for ample storage and ease of material handling within the warehouse. The floor system consists of a 7” reinforced slab, ensuring it can withstand the heavy loads associated with large-scale food distribution and processing operations. With its Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification, this facility meets the highest standards in food safety, positioning it as a key asset in the foodservice supply chain.
