ARCO completed the Maryville University Hockey Center in Chesterfield, Missouri, an 80,000-square-foot, two-sheet ice rink facility designed to support competitive hockey, training, and community use, with both immediate facility needs and potential future expansion in mind. The facility includes two NHL-sized ice sheets, spectator seating, elevated viewing areas, locker rooms, offices, concessions, and support spaces designed for daily ice operations.

In addition to the original construction, ARCO provided preliminary design and cost planning services to help the facility ownership team evaluate potential expansion options and make informed decisions about capital investments as the university’s hockey program evolved.

Incorporating Future Expansion into Facility Design

ARCO worked with the project team to develop a site and building layout that preserved space for a potential third ice sheet while accounting for parking, site access, utilities, and refrigeration infrastructure.

By considering how these elements could accommodate additional ice capacity and maintain efficient facility operations, ARCO helped minimize potential infrastructure modifications and site reconfiguration costs associated with future expansion.

Providing Design & Budget Clarity for Future Planning

ARCO helped the ownership team evaluate multiple expansion scenarios beyond the original two-sheet facility. While initial planning focused on a potential third practice rink, additional concepts explored increased spectator seating, improved viewing areas, and enhanced event functionality.

For each option, ARCO evaluated preliminary design requirements, operational considerations and provided associated estimated budget needs. This provided the ownership team with valuable information to compare alternatives, understand potential investment levels, and assess which improvements would best support future facility needs.

Helping Athletic Departments Plan for Long-Term Growth

The Maryville University Hockey Center demonstrates how early design and cost planning can help colleges and universities prepare for evolving athletic program needs, even when expansion is not an immediate priority.

By providing design and construction expertise early in the planning process, ARCO helps athletic departments assess project feasibility, establish realistic budgets, and better prepare for future capital investments.
