Mies Family Foods

Designed and built for Mies Family Foods, this project is a 80,000 SF cold storage facility and integrated 10,000 SF office area.

This project consists of an approximately 80,000 SF cold storage facility designed to support high-performance refrigerated operations. The building includes an integrated 10,000 SF office area for administrative and operational functions. Temperature-controlled spaces are broken down into a 10,000 SF 36° cooler, a 40,000 SF 0° freezer, and a 10,000 SF 38° cold dock, all engineered to meet strict temperature stability and operational efficiency requirements. A Freon-based refrigeration system serves all cold storage areas and is sized to support continuous industrial use.

The structure is constructed using insulated tilt-up concrete panels to provide durability, speed of construction, and thermal efficiency. Insulated metal panels are utilized at the cold dock and throughout all freezer exterior and interior rooms to maintain envelope integrity and limit thermal transfer. The building is designed with a 32-foot clear height to accommodate racked storage and efficient material handling. Electrical infrastructure includes a 3,000-amp electrical service, allowing capacity for refrigeration equipment, material handling systems, and future expansion.

The roof assembly consists of a 60-mil TPO roofing system, with R-40 insulation installed at freezer areas to meet energy performance requirements and reduce operating load. Truck access and logistics are supported by ten dock positions at the cold dock and one drive-in ramp, enabling efficient inbound and outbound product movement. Fire protection is provided by a double interlock dry ESFR fire protection system, designed specifically for freezer environments and high-piled storage conditions.

Site preparation included 8 feet of over-excavation and recompaction of soils at the building pad to achieve required bearing capacity and long-term slab performance. The facility was engineered and constructed to meet the demands of cold storage operations, focusing on structural integrity, thermal performance, life safety, and efficient logistics flow.
